Up to 50,000 people descend on Bray for air show

Up to 50,000 people descended on Bray, Co Wicklow, for the annual air show today.

A total of 27 jets and 46 aircraft are featuring in the event over the course of today and tomorrow.

Headlining today’s line-up were Italy’s Frecce Tricolori, performing for the first time in Bray.

One of the most experienced display groups, comprising 10 jets, the Italians impressed the crowds as they closed the first day of the two-day aviation event.

Another show highlight were the Breitling Wingwalkers who entertained with a display of acrobatics on the wings of Boeing Stearman bi-planes.

Other international acts included the Patrouille Tranchant, a Celtic jet team from Brittany, France flying Fouga aircraft and the Ravens from the UK. 

Homegrown talent was well represented by the Irish Air Corps, the Irish Historic Flight Foundation, CityJet’s new SuperJet SSJ100, the Black Knights Irish Defence Forces Parachute Team and the Irish Coast Guard Search & Rescue.

The world famous RAF Red Arrows carried out a fly-past along the River Liffey in Dublin this evening. And the Red Arrows will start the show tomorrow at 2pm.

Eamonn Brennan, Chief Executive of the Irish Aviation Authority said: "Aviation has played a critical role in the development of the Irish economy over the last 100 years and it remains a key part of the Irish economic system, supporting over 40,000 jobs directly.

"We hope that this weekend will have helped to inspire a new generation of pilots, engineers, and enthusiasts."
