Five families living in emergency accommodation who were told to leave a Dublin hotel by tomorrow because the hotel is in receivership are to be allowed to remain there until 1 August.

The operator of Lynam's on O'Connell Street has agreed to let the families stay in the accommodation at her own expense because the families say they have not been offered suitable alternative accommodation by Dublin City Council.

The future operation of the hotel will be decided in court on Tuesday but the family who run it have been told they have to cease trading at the premises by 1 August.

Lynam's, which is primarily a tourist hotel, has been also acting as emergency accommodation for 19 homeless families in recent months.

When the receiver informed Dublin City Council of its impending closure, the Council began to place homeless residents in alternative accommodation.

However, the five remaining families say they have not been offered suitable alternatives and want to stay at the current location.

Dublin City Council deny this, saying they have offered them all suitable alternative accommodation over the past two weeks.

The Council say negotiation about the use of Lynam's as emergency accommodation is ongoing and that they will continue to work with the families to source an alternative place for them to stay before the August deadline.

The hotel operators say they are "fighting tooth and nail" to keep it open and if they are successful they will continue to offer it to the Council as emergency accommodation.
