Two people have died in separate drowning incidents in Galway.

A 19-year-old man died after he got into difficulties while swimming in the River Corrib.

Emergency services were called to the scene, just north of the city centre, at around 2.30pm.

The man had been swimming with friends and the alarm was raised when others on the riverbank saw him get into difficulties.

The Shannon based 115 rescue helicopter, gardaí, fire service personnel and paramedics carried out a search operation along with members of the Galway sub aqua club.

The man was found just after 4pm and taken ashore.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

It is understood he was from the area.

The tragedy unfolded a short time after the body of a woman was recovered from Galway Harbour.

Gardaí were notified by a passerby that a woman was in the water at the small marina adjacent to the city centre.

Emergency services were called to the scene and with assistance from the RNLI, her remains were recovered a short time later.

The woman - who has not been formally identified - is said to have been in her late 40s or early 50s.
