The National Lottery has paid out an €8.2m jackpot won in Sligo that has been the subject of controversy as the deadline to claim the prize approached.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Stop and Shop on Sligo's Stephen Street on 5 March.

The deadline for claiming the prize was today.

The win has been subject of controversy as a person had come forward to claim the prize but the jackpot was not paid out until today.

Neither the lottery nor the claimant revealed why the prize was not paid out earlier.

A spokesperson for the National Lottery said they never comment on the specifics of individual claims to protect the privacy of the claimant.

The ticket in question cost €20, with numbers chosen by the player rather than through quickpick.
