ESB Networks are investigating the attempted theft of copper wire from the company’s sub-station in Inchicore, Dublin.
The theft resulted in a fire that left at least 14,000 homes in west Dublin without power for several hours.
The ESB estimates that the overall cost of the incident is estimated at up to €10 million.
The company has warned of the dangers of interfering with its electricity infrastructure.
It said such interference is a "highly dangerous activity with the perpetrators putting their lives and the lives of others at risk".
It is believed the fire started just before 7.30pm on Sunday evening.
Several units from the Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene and the blaze was put out shortly before midnight.
