The union representing striking Luas workers has agreed to meet employers Transdev next week.

SIPTU last night served notice for further strike action on six days later this month and in May.

Luas workers have already held eight days of industrial action, striking for four days in February, as well as Easter Sunday and Easter Monday in March, and 3 and 4 April.

A further 48-hour stoppage is scheduled for 23 and 24 April.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, SIPTU's Owen Reidy said the union has agreed to meet again with Luas operators Transdev on Monday afternoon.

He said that unless the company was willing to look at the reasons why the Work Relations Commission offer was "roundly rejected" by its members, the dispute would go on.

Mr Reidy said all transport disputes are unpopular with the public, however, he described the dispute as "continuing" rather than escalating.

He said dialogue and some form of compromise was needed to find a resolution.
