Army, gardaí and locals searching for missing soldier

Defence Forces, gardaí and volunteers in Galway are searching for a missing 21-year-old soldier, who was last seen leaving a nightclub in the city on Thursday morning.

Ben Garrett was last seen leaving Carbon nightclub on Eglington Street  at around 1.45am on Thursday.

A large crowd of volunteers also gathered in Oranmore earlier, before beginning a search of the coastline there.  

Mr Garrett’s sister Shannon expressed the family's gratitude to those assisting in the search.

Mr Garrett, who is originally from Castlebar in Co Mayo, was last seen wearing dark jeans and a light blue Hollister jumper.

He is described as being approximately 1.82m (6ft) tall, with a slim, athletic build and he has short brown hair.

Mr Garrett is based at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa barracks in Renmore in Galway city.
