School Rule 68 to be abolished

Minister for Education Jan O'Sullivan is to formally abolish a 50-year-old rule that has long been seen as an obstacle to enabling primary schools cater properly for children of minority religions and none.

After promising last month to get rid of it, Rule 68 will be rescinded by the minister this afternoon.

Rule 68 states that religious instruction is "a fundamental part" of schooling and that "a religious spirit should inform and vivify the whole work of the school".
