An Irish priest has been appointed to the Vatican office with responsibility for dialogue between faith and culture.
Monsignor Paul Tighe and Bishop Brian Farrell remain the most senior Irish officials in the Vatican.
Msgr Tighe was appointed as secretary of a working group to reform Vatican media just over a year ago.
The group is chaired by former BBC Trust chairperson Chris Patten.
Msgr Tighe is now titular Bishop of Drivastrum and Adjunct Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture, which traces its origins to the Second Vatican Council.
Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin congratulated Msgr Tighe on his appointment and said his innovation in media relations has made a significant impact in the church around the world.
Msgr Tighe graduated from UCD in 1979 with a degree in Civil Law and was ordained a priest in 1983.
His first job was as parish chaplain and teacher in Ballyfermot and was later assigned to study Moral Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
He has also worked at the Mater Dei Institute of Education in Dublin and at Holy Cross College, before being named as Director of the Communications Office of Dublin Diocese in 2004.
