A 15-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after being rescued from Hook Head, Co Wexford.

A Dublin-based Scout group were on the rocks when witnesses say a freak wave washed four of them into the sea.

Two managed to swim ashore but two others, a 15-year-old boy and a girl around the same age, were unable to get back.

Two lifeboats and the Waterford based coastguard helicopter were dispatched to the scene shortly after 2pm and the two teenagers were recovered from the water.

They were taken to University Hospital Waterford where the 15-year-old girl is said to be in a serious condition.
