Opel is recalling 8,000 Zafira B cars in Ireland, following a series of fires.
Owners are asked to visit their Opel dealership for a free inspection of the vehicle's heating and ventilation system when parts will be replaced for free.
Fires have been reported in several cars and a Facebook group highlighting the issue was set up.
The model affected is the Zafira B, built between 2005 and 2014.
The cars are all right-hand drive, non-climate control models.
Opel says any parts that need to be replaced will be changed at no cost to the customer, returning their vehicle to a safe operating condition.
Opel is working with the Vehicle Registration Office to contact all owners and will write to customers in due course.
Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donohoe said he was very concerned by the recall of the Opel Zafira B model cars and the reasons for the recall.
He said the issue highlighted the need to re-look at the way in which we test a variety of vehicles for a variety of reasons.
He said he believed it was necessary to look at how this could be done in a more standardised manner across Europe.
The minister said the European Commission had a leading role to play in that.
