A senior garda receved a pension lump sum of €262,000 last year, according to figures obtained by RTÉ News under the Freedom of Information Act.

The payment was one of 273 pension lump sums, totaling at €23.5m paid to retiring gardaí in 2014.

249 gardaí including one commissioner and four Chief Superintendents retired in the same year.

The second and third biggest payments were around €170,000 and €169,000, while there were ten payments over €135,000.

Last year, former garda commissioner Martin Callinan retired however a garda spokesperson could not confirm if he was the recipient of the highest lump sum payment of €262,000.

Figures also show the average payment to retiring gardaí in 2014 was just over €86,000.

And as of August 2015, there have 203 retirements with gratuities totaling €17m.

From the start of 2010 to August 2015, over €186.5 million was paid in lump sums to 1,946 retiring gardaí.
