11 August – Pacteau pleads guilty to Karen Buckley’s murder
Judge Lady Rae: "This crime is a very shocking and disturbing case. You killed a young woman who was a stranger to you in what appears to be a motiveless, senseless, brutal attack."
Counsel John Scullion QC: He (Pacteau) has instructed me to convey on his behalf an apology to Karen Buckley's family and friends but he understands that such words are unlikely to give any comfort to them, and whilst I too recognise that nothing said on his behalf is likely to lessen the pain and suffering which he has caused to those who loved Karen Buckley, those are my instructions," Mr Scullion said.
John Buckley: "We will never again see Karen in this life, we'll never again see her smiling face, we'll never hear her laugh or her voice, and there are actually no words to describe our loss."
8 September - Pacteau is sentenced to life in prison
Judge Lady Rae: "I find it extremely difficult to find words appropriate to describe the dreadful crime to which you pleaded guilty."
John Buckley: ""Today's life sentence will not bring our beautiful Karen back. Our little angel has been taken from us forever in the cruellest of ways. We mourn for her every day.
"It will however ensure that women are safe from harm from the truly evil coward who took our beautiful Karen's precious life. I hope that he is never released and spends every day in prison haunted by what he did."
Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Graham: "Such incidents are rare in our communities; where they do take place we will carry out professional, thorough and rigorous investigations to bring those responsible to justice."
