An investigation is under way at Stormont after a Tricolour was flown from the roof of parliament buildings for a time this afternoon.
DUP and Ulster Unionist Assembly members have asked the Speaker, Mitchel McLaughlin, and the Assembly's Chief Executive, Trevor Rainey, to investigate how the situation arose.
At present, the roof and fourth floor of parliament buildings are a construction site, under the control of contractors who are carrying out work there.
In a statement the Northern Ireland Assembly said the flags were removed soon as it was made aware of the incident.
The Ulster Unionist Assembly member and recently elected MP for Fermanagh-South Tyrone, Tom Elliot, said the incident was done to attract attention and to cause offence and annoyance.
Jim Allister, the sole Traditional Unionist Voice Assembly member, called the incident “a serious breach of protocol and absolutely unacceptable”.
Yesterday the Union Flag few over Stormont as it was a Coronation Day, marking when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned as monarch on 2 June 1953.
