Tesco says it has no plans to close stores in Ireland despite its intention to shut down 43 unprofitable stores in the UK, but a net 90 jobs are to go in Ireland.
The stores are closing as part of a cost-cutting and restructuring operation under new CEO Dave Lewis.
Tesco issued a number of profit warnings last year.
A spokesperson for Tesco Ireland said it had made 350 night staff redundant through a voluntary scheme, mostly in shelf packing.
260 of these posts will be back-filled with day-time working arrangements, leaving a net loss of 90 jobs.
Shares in Tesco are up as much as 10% today, their biggest one-day jump since 2008.
