The funeral has taken place of former independent TD for Kerry South Jackie Healy-Rae, who died on Friday.

He was 83, and had been ill for some time.

Former taoisigh Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowen were among those in attendance at the funeral.

President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Enda Kenny were represented by their aides-de-camp.

Requiem mass was in St Patrick's Church, Kilgarvan and burial afterwards was in the local cemetery.

Local priest father Con Buckley told the congregation that this was the church where Mr Healy-Rae was baptised, received his First Holy Communion, was confirmed and worshiped throughout his life.

He described him as a 'dynamic figure' and said a void has been left by his passing.

Father Buckley said the funeral mass was a celebration of a fruitful life.

Mr Healy Rae's family bore gifts to the alter to symbolise the loves of his life, including a hurley, an accordion, some turf, a model of a mini-digger, a canvassing card and his mobile phone to mark his love of politics.

His son Michael promised that the family would maintain the tradition in politics.

Mr Healy-Rae was the patriarch of a political dynasty, which includes Michael, who succeeded him as a TD for Kerry South, and another son Danny, and a grandson Johnny, who are members of Kerry County Council.

He had four sons and two daughters and his family members were with him when he died.

Jackie Healy-Rae was first co-opted to Kerry County Council in 1973, filling the seat left vacant by the death of Cllr Michael Doherty.

The following year he was elected to Kerry County Council.

He served as Cathaoirleach of the council between 1980 and 1981 and again between 1995 and 1996.

Mr Healy-Rae served on the council until the abolition of the dual mandate saw Danny Healy-Rae replace him on Kerry County Council in 2003.

He was elected to Dáil Éireann in 1997 and served the Kerry South constituency until 2011, when he stood down before the 2011 general election, with his son Michael taking a seat in the constituency.
