A Health and Safety Authority investigation has taken place in Co Donegal following a fatal farm accident yesterday.

Neighbours Kevin Woods and Seamus Hegarty, both 52, were killed after a tractor tyre they were changing exploded.

The incident happened in the Killygordon area between Ballybofey and Strabane at around 6pm.

Both men were from Argary near Raphoe.

Post-mortem examinations on the bodies of the men took place today.

Independent Councillor Frank McBrearty knew both of the men and said they were well respected farmers in the area.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families. No words can describe the hurt that these families are going through," he said.

"I know both families very well and I think the shock that's in the community at the minute is just devastating.

"I think we have to step back and give the families some space to cope with this terrible tragedy."

Local Sinn Féin Councillor Liam Doherty expressed his deepest sympathies to the men's families.

He said the shock is now filtering through the community.

"It's a very close-knit community here and it's just utter shock with this time running up to Christmas - it's tough," he added.

Meanwhile, CEO of the HSA Martin O'Halloran said they had noticed an increase in the number of accidents involving tyres in the work place in the last number of years.

He also said that of the 49 accidents that happened at work so far this year 27 of these were in the agriculture sector.
