Ferry company Stena Line has cancelled its scheduled services between Dun Laoghaire and Holyhead for the Christmas period.

Sailing were due to run from 20 December until early January 2015.

The company said in a statement, "In recent years Stena Line has deployed the HSS for a few days over the Christmas holiday period on its Holyhead-Dun Laoghaire service. For commercial and operational reasons the company has decided not to reactivate the vessel this year for the short Christmas holiday period."

For the past four years the schedule of the fast ferry from Dun Laoghaire - the HSS Stena Explorer - has been reduced.

It has run on a seasonal basis, during the summer months and for a few weeks at Christmas.

The fast ferry takes two hours and 20 minutes to cross the Irish Sea.

Customers already booked on the Christmas sailings between Dun Laoghaire and Holyhead will be accommodated on other sailings.

The cancellation of the Christmas service from Dun Laoghaire will heighten fears about Stena Line's future in Dun Laoghaire.

Stena Line also said tonight that it is "currently engaged in ongoing discussions with Dun Laoghaire Harbour in relation to the provision of a seasonal fast craft service in 2015."
