A post-mortem examination has been carried out on the body of a 15-year-old boy, who died after becoming ill during a football match in Galway at the weekend.

Hassan Taiwo was playing for Merlin Woods FC when he collapsed on the pitch during a game in Doughiska.

Emergency services were called to the scene and he was taken to University Hospital Galway.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Galway Football Association today expressed its deepest sympathies to Hassan's family.

In a brief statement, Galway FA said it learned of the death with deep regret and passed its sympathies to his relatives, friends and team mates.

Friends of the 15-year-old have expressed their sadness at Hassan's death on social media networks.

He was a student at St Joseph's Patrician College in Galway.
