The head of the Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society (MEAS), the alcohol industry funded-body, has said no conflict of interest arises in relation to her proposed nomination to the board of RTÉ.

Fionnuala Sheehan was responding to a statement from Independent TD Róisín Shortall, who has called on Minister for Communications Alex White not to endorse her appointment.

Ms Sheehan said she would be resigning as the MEAS chief executive "in the coming weeks", and, if appointed to the RTÉ board, would not be taking up that position until next February.

She said she had previous and extensive experience of working in the public and civil service, the private sector, and in higher education.

Ms Shortall made her comments following reports that the Committee on Transport and Communications had included Ms Sheehan among its four nominees to the board of RTÉ.

In a statement, Minister White said he had not yet reviewed the nominations made for the RTÉ board by the committee.

"These nominations are for vacancies that are due to arise in February 2015, and appointments to fill these vacancies will be made in due course," he added.
