A Dublin-based lighting designer has picked up an Emmy as part of the team who designed the lighting for the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Peter Canning along with Al Gurdon, Ross Williams and Michael Owen won the 'Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special' at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Mr Canning was associate lighting designer for the ceremonies at the games in Sochi, Russia.

He has also designed the lighting for 'Skyfest' for Dublin’s St Patrick’s Festival and for 'Heartbeat of Home', the new theatre show from the creators of 'Riverdance'.

In Ireland, his television credits include 'The Voice of Ireland' (Series 1-3), The Hit (Series 1), 'Deal or No Deal' and 'The Restaurant'.

Mr Canning was part of the front of house team for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow.

He was also involved with the Wembley Arena lighting for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
