A 28-year-old man has died and two women have been injured in a two-vehicle crash on the M8 in Co Cork.

The man died after the car he was driving collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle between Mitchelstown and Fermoy.

A woman travelling in the car with him sustained minor injuries.

A 71-year-old woman driving the four-wheel drive vehicle was seriously injured.

The drivers of the two vehicles were airlifted to Cork University Hospital.

Garda forensic investigators are at the scene of the crash.

The northbound section of the M8 remains closed, but the southbound section has reopened.
