The Government has announced that it is to spend €6.5m in the development of three off-road cycle routes in counties Kerry, Galway and Waterford.

The flagship project will be the conversion of part of the disused Great Southern Railway line on the Ring of Kerry into a 26km cycleway between Glenbeigh and Renard.

The route boasts spectacular views over Dingle Bay.

The other routes will be from Galway city to Moycullen, and from Clonea through Kilmacthomas, and along the coast to Durrow in Co Waterford.

Another €6.5m will be spent in nine towns to improve cycling infrastructure there, including the development of cycle lanes.

The towns involved are Birr, Claremorris, Ennis, Cavan, Sligo, Tralee, Thurles, Wexford and Clonmel.
