The body of 21-year-old Co Clare student Stephen Kavanagh, who had been missing for over two weeks, was recovered from a canal near Ardnacrusha power station this afternoon.

A search involving Limerick Marine Search and Rescue, the Coast Guard, Civil Defence and search teams from Mallow and Killaloe had been ongoing on a stretch of water near Clonlara Bridge since he went missing in the early hours of 6 March.

Mr Kavanagh was from Clonlara and had been a student at Limerick Institute of Technology.

His body has been removed to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination.
