A fisherman is recovering in hospital after being airlifted from a trawler off the west coast of Mayo.

The man, who it is believed had head injuries, was taken from the vessel by the Irish Coast Guard rescue helicopter.

The vessel was about 140 nautical miles off the coast.

An Air Corps Casa plane provided assistance to the helicopter after a request for assistance from the Irish Coast Guard.

The fisherman was taken to Sligo General Hospital.
