Politicians and civic leaders in Co Wexford have expressed shock and surprise at the immediate closure of one of the county's longest established companies with the loss of 47 jobs.

Irish Driver-Harris employed nearly 50 people at its facility in New Ross for the past 80 years.

It is believed at least 20 more non-direct jobs are also under threat.

The company informed staff at a meeting this morning that the factory was to close immediately.

Some people have been working there for up to 40 years.

The company manufactures electrical cables.

Unions representing some of the employees are due to meet tomorrow morning to discuss the situation.
