A 37-year-old man has died after a car went into a lake in Co Roscommon in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí say Shane Donnelly died at Grange Lake on the River Shannon near Strokestown.

He was the chief administrator at Meath County Council and former Navan Town Clerk.

Mr Donnelly was married with three children.

There were two people in the car at the time and efforts to release the man proved difficult.

He was eventually taken from the car and attempts were made to resuscitate him but he died.

A garda investigation is under way.
