There has been an 85% increase in racist incidents reported during 2013, according to preliminary figures from the Immigrant Council of Ireland.

The figures suggest that 142 incidents were reported since January, compared to 77 over the same period last year.

Reports peaked over the summer months, with 31 incidents in July alone.

Harassment, both verbal and written, were the most common complaints.

Most cases occurred in a person's local community or workplace.
