A number of residents of an apartment block in Navan, Co Meath, have been told to evacuate the building because of fire safety concerns.

It follows concerns raised about the Kentswood Court complex at Johnstown on the outskirts of Navan.

An application for a fire safety certificate for the development was made in 2006, but this application was refused.

Around 20 apartments are included in the two-storey complex.

It is understood the fire safety issues relate to the upper floors of the building.

It has emerged that no fire safety certificate was ever issued for the building.

Meath County Council is working with receivers Grant Thornton to establish what needs to be done to make the complex fire compliant.

Residents have until Sunday to evacuate the building. It is not yet known how many people are affected.
