President Higgins has begun a twelve-day visit to Central America where he due to carry out engagements in Mexico, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.

The theme of the visit is development aid and trade.

In Mexico, Michael D Higgins will meet with President Enrique Peña Nieto.

President Higgins is due to attend a major business summit in Guadalajara where he is to make a keynote address, the first head of state to do so at this event.

He will outline links between the two countries and how they can be advanced in another address in Mexico City.

The President will also meet members of the Irish community and attend a business breakfast in the capital.

His first official engagement will be a wreath-laying ceremony at a memorial to the Batalion de San Patricio commemorating Irish who fought in the Mexican Army against the US.
