An investigation is under way after the death of a 22-month-old girl who fell from the window of a third-floor apartment in Finglas in Dublin.

The incident took place at 9.30am at Tolka Vale Apartments on Finglas Road.

It is understood the girl, whose parents are Slovakian, crawled into her brother's bedroom and fell out a window.

Her parents noticed she was missing and found her lying on the ground outside their property. They hailed a taxi and travelled to the Mater Hospital where the child was pronounced dead at 10.30am.

Gardaí are describing the incident as a tragedy and an investigation is under way to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death.

A post-mortem will be carried out later in the week.

It is believed the girl lived at the apartment with her parents and brother.
