Two people have drowned in separate incidents, a 21-year-old drowned in Co Limerick and a 17-year-old drowned in Co Kildare.

A 21-year-old woman from Co Limerick drowned early this morning after she got into difficulty while swimming with friends on the River Feale.

She and a group of friends had been swimming in an area on the river known as the Powerhouse on the Killarney road at around midnight.

The woman became separated from the group and a search was launched.

She was unconscious when she was taken from the water and efforts to revive her failed.

She has been named as Lisa Knight, who was from the Caherhayes area in Abbeyfeale.

Separately, a 17-year-old died after he got into difficulty in a river in Celbridge, Co Kildare this afternoon.

Gardaí said the teenager was rescued from the water at around 4pm.

Efforts to resuscitate him failed. His body was removed to Blanchardstown Hospital.
