The first Czech quintuplets were successfully born in a Prague maternity hospital by Caesarean section this morning.

The babies and their mother are in a good condition, doctors in the Prague-Podoli hospital said.

The quintuplets are four boys and one girl, their father said.

The newborn babies were immediately placed in the neonatal intensive care unit.

They are in incubators and their breathing is slightly artificially supported.

All five babies came into the world in less than five minutes, Zbynek Stranak, head doctor of the hospital's neonatal ward, told reporters.

He added that he expected everything to turn out well in view of the newborn babies' condition.

The father, who was present at the delivery, said the babies' names will be Tereza, Alex, Martin, Michael and Deniel.

They have already one brother at home.

The father travelled to Prague by rail, and his train was delayed.

"I was crying all the way since I feared I would not manage it," he said. He eventually arrived on time.

He added that the mother was in a calmer mood than him before the complicated surgery.
