Gardaí in Co Offaly have detained a second man as part of their investigation into an attempted robbery last night.

A knife was used in an attempted raid on a filling station in the village of Geashill shortly before 8pm.

Two men demanded cash but one of the raiders was confronted by a local man while the second man fled.

It is understood the man was detained at the filling station by two local customers while the alarm was raised.

Gardaí arrested the man at the scene.

The second raider drove away in the direction of Portarlington but gardaí later arrested a man in connection with their investigation.

Gardaí have praised the actions of two local men, including a well-known Offaly county hurler, who came to the assistance of the filling station staff during the attempted raid.

No-one was injured and a sum of a money and a knife were also recovered.
