Gardaí in Co Wicklow have begun a murder investigation following the discovery of Philip O'Toole, who had been missing for two and a half weeks.

Detectives believe the 33-year-old was abducted and shot dead in Trooperstown Wood in Co Wicklow.

The body of the father-of-one was discovered by gardaí following a planned search at the wood.

He was last seen leaving a house in Arklow on 7 January and his car was later found on Dargle Road in Bray.

Mr O'Toole was a convicted criminal and known to gardaí for his connections to drug gangs and involvement in serious crime.

He was shot two years ago and was aware his life was in danger.

Gardaí in Bray have appealed to anyone with information about his disappearance to contact them.
