A garda questioned by investigators from the Garda Ombudsman Commission about an alleged sexual assault has been released without charge.
He was arrested this morning and brought to Loughrea Garda Station for questioning.
The offence is alleged to have occurred in the midlands and the garda has been suspended by the Garda Commissioner.
The Garda Ombudsman Commission confirmed the arrest and said a garda was assisting them with their inquiry into an allegation of a criminal nature
The garda is the first member of the force to be arrested by the Garda Ombudsman since the Commission was set up five years ago.
