The lawyer for one of the two defendants in the Michaela McAreavey murder trial made his opening submission today.
As barrister for Avinash Treebhoowoon outlined to the jury his client's claims that he was forced to sign a confession, John McAreavey said "lies" from the public area of the court.
Sanjeev Teeluckdharry told the Supreme Court in Port Louis, Mauritius, that Mr Treebhoowoon had been wrongly accused of the crime and subjected to torture in order to extract a confession.
Following a ruling on legal arguments by the presiding Supreme Court judge this morning, there are indications the trial will conclude next week.
The trial of two local hotel workers - Avinash Treebhoowoon and Sandip Moneea - is in its sixth week.
Both men deny murdering Mrs McAreavey, who was found strangled in her room at the luxury Legends Hotel on the holiday island last January.
Mr Treebhoowoon is expected to give evidence tomorrow.
A statement released on behalf of the McAreavey and Harte familes said the remark made by John McAreavey reflected the frustration and pain felt by the families.
