Former Christian Brother Seamus Tracey faces 138 charges of indecently assaulting three boys

A 70-year-old former Christian Brother has appeared at the district court in Limerick accused of 138 charges of indecent assault on young boys dating back to 1978.

Seamus Treacy with an address at Ashton Close in Swords in Dublin made no reply to the 138 charges when they were put to him following his arrest at Roxboro Garda Station this morning.

The former Christian Brother based at CBS primary school in Sexton Street in Limerick city.

The charges relate to the indecent assault of 13 young boys who were attending CBS primary school between 1978 and 1981.

The offences are also alleged to have taken place at St Enda’s swimming pool in Limerick.

The accused man was granted free legal aid and solicitor Bobby Eagar of Garret Sheehan and Company in Dublin was appointed to represent him.

He was granted bail on condition that he surrenders his passport to gardaí.

The court was told that the DPP had consented that the matter be dealt with by the Circuit Court.

The accused man was remanded to appear in court again on 24 July for the service of the book of evidence.

An application to impose restrictions on the reporting of the accused man’s name was refused by Judge Eugene O’Kelly because of the antiquity of the charges and the fact that the alleged injured parties are no longer minors.
