A 21-year-old woman is being treated in hospital after she was knocked down by a garda van responding to a call-out in Cork city early this morning.
The incident happened just after midnight on Lavitt's Quay, close to the Cork Opera House.
It is understood the woman was crossing the road when she was struck by the van on its way from the Bridewell Garda Station to Mahon following reports of a public order incident there.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.
It is understood that she suffered a number of broken bones in the collision. Her condition is said to be serious but not life threatening.
The incident has been referred by the Garda Commissioner to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission for investigation.
The Ombudsman has appealed for witnesses to contact them on 1890-600800.
Traffic restrictions in the area of Lavitt's Quay have now been lifted.
Diversions had been in place.
