Garda Gary McLoughlin plaque vandalised

A plaque erected by the family of the late Garda Gary McLoughlin in Burt, Co Donegal, has been vandalised.

The small granite plaque was broken and a piece of it was placed on the bonnet of a car owned by a brother of the late garda's girlfriend.

The vandalism was reported to gardaí in Buncrana on Wednesday.

Garda McLoughlin’s family are said to be very upset by the incident.

Mr McLoughlin died after being hit by a car driven by Martin McDermott in December 2009.

McDermott was jailed for seven years but escaped from Loughan House open prison on 16 March.

He was arrested in Derry the following day and is currently in prison in Northern Ireland.

He is expected to be extradited to the Republic in the near future.

Superintendent Kevin English described the vandalism as "demonic and sickening in the extreme".
