A fireman attending an incident in the Garryowen area of Limerick last night was attacked by a group of youths.
The Irish Fire and Emergency Services Association said the officer required stitches for injuries to his face after stones were thrown at him.
Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, IFESA national secretary John Kidd called for proper compensation for emergency workers injured in the line of duty.
