Gardaí have confirmed that a body has been found in Lifford, Co Donegal, at an area called Islandmore at the River Finn.
The skeletal remains were found shortly after 9am and remain at the scene for examination.
The remains were found by a digger driver who was removing sand at the area.
Superintendent Vincent O'Brien said that gardaí cannot confirm if the remains are those of a young Lifford man who went missing last May until a post mortem and DNA analysis have been completed.
David Colhoun, 22, went missing from police custody in Strabane, Co Tyrone, and an extensive search of the river and surrounding area was carried out.
His father today said he believes the body is that of his son. Joseph Colhoun said it was a relief to get closure after ten months of hell.
Speaking at the scene this afternoon, Mr Colhoun said they are sad but also glad that David's remains have been recovered and he can be buried with his mother, who died last February.
