The latest innovations and trends in mobile technology will be on display in Barcelona, Spain, from Monday as this year's Mobile World Congress kicks off.

Thousands of attendees from around the globe will descend on the city for the week-long event, hoping to see what new products and services some of the world's biggest companies will have to offer in the months ahead.

Mobile World Congress has become an increasingly important part of the technology calendar in recent years, largely due to the rapidly moving trend that has seen people turn to their phones - and not their PCs - for information and entertainment.

This year's event is particularly significant as phone-makers like Samsung strive to stake a claim in the lucrative tablet market that has so far been dominated by Apple's iPad.

The trend towards mobile means that software and web-based companies will also be keen to show off what they are doing, with companies like eBay and Facebook now trying to appeal to an increasingly mobile customer.

Alongside the world's big technology players, many Irish companies will also be in attendance at Mobile World Congress 2012.

Enterprise Ireland will have an exhibition space at the event, where many Irish start-ups and fast-growing companies will be hoping to attract international interest.
