A two-year-old boy has died after an accident on an unfinished housing estate outside Athlone, Co Westmeath.
Gardaí say the toddler went missing shortly after midday.
It is understood his body was discovered in a small pool of water beside a drain area in the Glenatore development.
The child's mother, assisted by neighbours, had carried out a search this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene and the child was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Balliansloe, where he later died.
Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
The Health & Safety Authority said its inspectors are also at the scene.
