Waterford City Councillors have voted in favour of a motion calling on the Government to scrap the Household Charge.
Councillors voted nine to five for the motion at last night's monthly meeting.
Independent Councillor Mary Roche said the charge in its current form suits nobody.
Over 100 people staged a protest outside the city council offices last night in opposition to the charge.
Four Fine Gael councillors and one Labour councillor voted against the motion, which was proposed by Cllrs Dick Roche and Davy Walsh.
Around 700 people attended a meeting in Waterford city last week, as part of a nationwide campaign against the proposed Household Charge.
