Dublin city has recorded a reduction in road traffic accident deaths more than three times the national average.

Figures show that there were just ten such fatalities in the city area last year compared to 19 in 2010 and 32 in 2009, which is a decrease of nearly 70% in the three years.

However, there is debate over whether the introduction of the 30km speed limit in parts of the city area in early 2010 has helped.

The Automobile Association says the HGV ban, improvements to the M50 and traffic reduction due to the recession are the main factors.

But Dublin Lord Mayor Andrew Montague, who helped bring in the limit as chairman of the city council's traffic committee, said traffic speed in the city centre has been reduced since the limit was introduced.

The city council will be seeking submissions from the public on all speed limits in the city area as part of a consultation process that will see final recommendations by the summer.

It is understood there are currently no proposals to end the 30km restriction.
