Australian media is reporting the death of a 24-year-old Irishman in a suspected gas explosion in Darwin yesterday.

It is understood that the man was working with gas cylinders, which are believed to have ignited.

The blast blew the doors off a vehicle, caused damage to a nearby house and shattered the glass in neighbouring houses.

The Irish Embassy in Canberra is in contact with police in Darwin.

The victim's name has not been released.
