Met Éireann has issued a severe weather alert across Ireland today.

The Irish Coast Guard has meanwhile warned the public to avoid exposed cliff paths, coasts and coastal areas.

Stormy conditions are expected through Connacht and Ulster with gale force winds and damaging gusts of 100-140km/h.

It will be extremely windy elsewhere with gusts of 100km/h at times.

Met Éireann's Harm Luijkx says the stormy conditions will continue throughout today.

Tomorrow will continue unsettled and will turn very cold with showers of hail and a widespread sharp frost.

AA Roadwatch is advising motorists to reduce their speed and watch out for possible fallen debris, especially on back roads.

It has advised that high-sided vehicles are particularly vulnerable on open or exposed roads.
