A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing in the Gobnascale area in Derry.

A 56-year-old man was found dead at Holymount Park in the Gobnascale area around 1am.

Police said a woman was also found with minor injuries.

Community leaders in Derry have spoken of their shock after a stabbing claimed the life of a 56-year-old man.

SDLP councillor Gerard Diver said the Gobnascale community is in shock over the killing.

Gerard Diver "I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and close friends of the victim, they have to deal with a situation that every family dreads," he said.

He continued, "People are shocked and saddened at this awful news. "I urge anybody with information to bring it to the police."

Local priest Fr Michael Canny said the victim was well known in the area and said people were devastated by the incident.
Detectives have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
