The Taoiseach has said a compromise could be reached regarding controversial plans to construct a flood defence barrier in Clontarf.

Enda Kenny said the Office of Public Works would be happy to consider an alternative plan from Dublin City Council following consultation with local interests in Clontarf, and the council's own consultants.

He was responding to a question from Independent Finian McGrath, who said if the plans as proposed went ahead, it would be environmental vandalism.

Deputy McGrath asked the Taoiseach would he tell Dublin City Manager to come up with a new and reasonable plan for flood defence.

The Taoiseach reminded Deputy McGrath that permission was granted for the scale of the barrier in question. He said he was not sure how that slipped through all the vigilant councillors in Dublin City Council.

He said it is visually appealing to people to be able to see the bay, and said he is not surprised that Clontarf residents feel aggrieved.
